Visiting Montana: Our Stay at Lone Mountain Ranch

Montana was a trip I had been looking forward to because this would be my first time visiting and our first stop was Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky. We spent three nights here with our family. Between the beautiful mountain scenery, cozy cabins, delicious food, and outdoor adventures, the ranch offered a little bit of everything.

We visited in October and were surprised to find about 4–6 inches of snow waiting for us when we arrived in Montana! We weren’t expecting snow, but it made everything feel extra cozy and beautiful.

If you’re planning a trip to Montana and considering where to stay, here’s a closer look at our experience at Lone Mountain Ranch, including the cabin where we stayed, where we ate, what we did, and whether I think it’s worth the cost.

Where We Stayed: B-K Cabin

We stayed in the B-K Cabin (pronounced bee-bar-kay), and it is a spacious cabin. Our group consisted of six adults and two children under the age of three, so having enough room for everyone was important. The cabin has 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, an indoor and outdoor fireplace, which comfortably accommodated us with plenty of space for everyone to settle in. The ranch also provided baby cribs for both of the little ones, which was a huge help when traveling with young children.

Traveling with a larger family group can sometimes make accommodations tricky. You want everyone to be comfortable, but you also want to spend time together rather than spread out across multiple hotel rooms. B-K Cabin gave us that combination of space and togetherness. The cabin was stocked with board games, sparkling water, coffee, and other soft drinks. In addition to that, every morning, hot coffees were delivered to our door for us to enjoy together.

Another highlight was having both an indoor and an outdoor fire pit. With 4–6 inches of snow falling around us on arrival day, lighting a fire in the cabin felt particularly cozy.

For families traveling with young children or groups traveling together, I would definitely keep B-K Cabin in mind. Having room for everyone, along with the added convenience of the cribs provided by the ranch, made our stay that much easier.

Where We Ate: Horn & Cantle

Horn & Cantle is the main restaurant at Lone Mountain Ranch. It’s the kind of place where the setting adds to the overall dining experience, but the food and service really lives up to expectation.

The food was great and fresh, with plenty of options for everyone in our group. Traveling with children can sometimes make restaurant choices more challenging, so I especially appreciated that Horn & Cantle had a wonderful kids’ menu.

The service was great, too. The staff were super friendly and helpful, which made the whole experience even better. Good food is always a plus, but great service really makes a difference, especially when you’re dining with a big group. As for my dinner recommendations, I tried the 32 oz tomahawk bone-in beef ribeye, smoked cheddar and bacon mac-n-cheese, bison short rib, and truffle fries. Everything was worth trying, so I’d definitely recommend giving these a shot if you’re checking out the menu. It is worth noting that alcohol is not included in the all-inclusive package.

What We Did: Activities at the Ranch

One thing I really appreciated about Lone Mountain Ranch was the help we received planning our activities.

The ranch’s activities manager worked with us to organize our itinerary around the specific experiences we wanted to try prior to us arriving at the ranch. Our planned activities included horseback riding, archery, high ropes climbing, and a private excursion to Yellowstone National Park.

Because of the snowfall, our horseback riding and the high ropes climbing course was canceled. We were still able to participate in archery, so we did get to enjoy one of the activities we’d been looking forward to. McCabe was our archery instructor and he was great. He showed us some bear tracks while walking to the archery location.

The ability to arrange experiences around our group’s interests was a definite plus. Instead of trying to organize everything ourselves, we could focus on enjoying the trip. For anyone planning a stay here, I would recommend speaking with the activities team ahead of time to discuss what you’d like to do and what works best for your group.

Our Private Yellowstone National Park Excursion

One of the biggest highlights of our time in Montana was our private excursion to Yellowstone National Park. We took the South Loop, and it turned out to be a wonderful way to experience the park. Yellowstone is known for its geothermal features, waterfalls, and wildlife, and we were fortunate to see a little bit of everything during our excursion.

Some of my favorite sights included Firehole Falls, Old Faithful Geyser, and Artist Point Falls. Each stop offered something different and some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen.

The wildlife sightings were another highlight. Along the way, we spotted bison’s, a coyote, and a giant bull elk along the road. It was great to see these wild animals, and seeing them in their natural environment adds a completely different dimension to a national park visit.

Our guide Gannon was also VERY knowledgeable, which made a big difference. Having someone who could share information about the places we were visiting added context to the experience and made the journey more interesting. Lunch was provided as well, which was a convenient touch during a full day of exploring.

If you’re staying at Lone Mountain Ranch and hoping to visit Yellowstone, I would definitely ask about excursion options. Having the planning, guiding, and lunch taken care of made this a particularly enjoyable part of our Montana trip.

Final Thoughts: Is Lone Mountain Ranch Worth the Cost?

Lone Mountain Ranch can be a little pricey, so I think it’s worth considering what you’re getting for the cost. What I liked was that the experience felt much more comprehensive than simply booking a cabin or hotel room. The ranch offers an all-inclusive-style stay, with accommodations, dining, and activities available as part of the overall experience. The exact inclusions can depend on the package you book, so it’s worth confirming what is covered before making a reservation.

For us, having the activities manager help organize our itinerary was a major advantage. We could arrange experiences that suited our family, enjoy meals at the ranch, and take a private excursion to Yellowstone without having to coordinate every detail independently. The accommodations were another important factor. The B-K cabin comfortably accommodated our group of eight, including two children under three, and the cribs provided by the ranch were a thoughtful convenience. There are smaller cabins depending on the size of your party.

One downside is that, despite being an all-inclusive experience, tipping felt as though it was expected based on the cost of each meal. For example, at the end of dinner, we were given a bill showing what the meal would have cost had we been paying out of pocket, and we then felt obliged to tip based on that amount. While the meals were included in the overall price of our stay, it is still an additional expense to factor in.

Is it the right choice for every budget? Probably not. But if you’re looking for a more comprehensive Montana experience, particularly for a family or a group traveling together, I think Lone Mountain Ranch is worth considering. My advice would be to compare the full cost of a stay, including meals and activities, rather than looking at the nightly rate alone. That will give you a better sense of whether the experience makes sense for your trip.
