Best Time to Book Flights: Myth vs. Reality

Best Time to Book Flights: Myth vs. Reality

You’ve probably heard advice like:

  • “Always book on a Tuesday.”
  • “Wait until the last minute.”
  • “Book _____ days before departure.”

The truth is most of these “rules” are simply false. While there isn’t a magic day/formula that guarantees the cheapest flight, there are strategies that can help you save money.

Myth #1: Tuesday Is Always the Cheapest Day to Book

For years, travelers were told to book flights on Tuesdays because airlines released sales overnight.

Reality: Airlines now use pricing algorithms that adjust fares constantly. While you may occasionally find a deal on a Tuesday, there is no guaranteed cheapest day to book. Rather than wait for Tuesday, focus on tracking prices instead of waiting for a specific day of the week.

Myth #2: Last-Minute Flights Are Cheaper

Many people assume airlines slash prices to fill empty seats.

Reality: In most cases, last-minute flights are more expensive. While you may find cheap last minute flight deals, prices are more likely to be higher the closer you get to departure.

Myth #3: Booking as Early as Possible Always Gets the Best Price

This sounds logical, but it’s not always true.

Reality: Airlines often adjust prices multiple times before departure based on demand. The goal isn’t necessarily to book first; it’s to book when prices are favorable.

So, When Should You Book?

Generally speaking, these guidelines work well:

  • For Domestic Flights, aim to book 2 to 3 months before departure.
  • International Flights, aim to book 3 to 8 months before departure.

Popular destinations during peak travel seasons may require even more advance planning.

The best way to maximize your chances of finding the cheapest flight is by tracking prices.

Instead of guessing, monitor prices. Many booking sites offer price tracking tools can notify you when prices rise or fall, helping you make a more informed decision. If the cost of a flight drops after booking, airlines will often offer a fare adjustment or refund the difference if the price decreases.

Don’t Forget About Points

Sometimes the best deal isn’t paying cash at all. If flight prices spike, check whether you can use points or miles instead. In some cases, redeeming points can provide better value than paying cash.

This is one reason I prefer earning travel points over traditional cash-back rewards.

The Bottom Line

There is no magic day to book flights. The best strategy is to book within a reasonable window, track prices, and compare both cash and points options before making a purchase.
