Credit cards…. Why use them?

When used responsibly, credit cards are one of the most powerful tools for traveling on a budget. Here’s why I recommend using credit cards, not debit cards, for your daily use.

  • Earn Points on Everyday Spending
    • Use a credit card for everyday spending like groceries, gas, dining, and bills to accumulate points. Thee points that can be redeemed for flights, hotels, or upgrades. For example: I used 30,000 points ($300 cash value) for a $1,259 hotel stay in Osaka.
  • Welcome Bonuses = Instant Travel Credit
    • Many travel cards offer between 20,000 to 100,000 points sign-up bonuses after you meet a minimum spend. That’s often worth between $200–$1,200+ in flights or hotels.
  • Transfer Partners = Massive Value
    • Points from programs like Chase, Amex, or Capital One can be transferred to airline and hotel partners. This gives you far more flexibility and sometimes much more value compared to just redeeming for cash back.
  • Perks That Debit Cards Don’t Offer
    • Credit cards can offer several perks like travel insurance, lounge access, rental car coverage, purchase protection, and no foreign transaction fees. Debit cards typically offer none of that.
  • Protect Your Money
    • Credit cards offer fraud protection and allow you to dispute unauthorized charges. With debit cards, that money leaves your account instantly, and it can take days or weeks to resolve.
